“Amazing grace how sweet the sound that save a wretch like me. I once was lost but now am found, was blind but now I see.”
As we hear those words from Chris Tomlin’s excellent version of Amazing Grace fade into the background, what a fantastic reminder it is, that the man in today’s passage, isn’t the only person Jesus healed from blindness. Jesus healed you and me from blindness too. Before, we were blind to the fantastic news of Jesus, just like many of your friends at school or college. Before, we were blind to the fact God created the world even though we are surrounded by its beauty. Just like those people who believe the world was created without any intervention from God. Before we were blind, just like those people you walk past on the street, to the love that we will receive from God forever more, when we party with him in heaven. But we are no longer blind; we are no longer lost because we have asked Jesus to be our Saviour and King. And just like the subtitle to Chris Tomlin’s brilliant version of Amazing grace says “My chains are gone.” Yes your chains and my chains are truly gone. We no longer need to seek gratification from those here on Earth. We no longer need to measure up to anyone else standards. We don’t need to mutilate ourselves to fit in. We don’t need to sleep around to find love. We don’t need to get drunk at parties to try and find happiness. No, our chains are gone because of the amazing grace of our Lord, just like the blind man in this passage.
Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, That saved a wretch like me, I once was lost but now am found, was blind, but now, I see.
T’was Grace that taught my heart to fear. And Grace, my fears relieved. How precious did that Grace appear the hour I first believed. Through many dangers, toils and snares we have already come.
T’was Grace that brought us safe thus far and Grace will lead us home. The Lord has promised good to me. His word my hope secures. He will my shield and portion be as long as life endures.
When we’ve been here ten thousand years bright shining as the sun. We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise then when we’ve first begun.
Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, That saved a wretch like me. I once was lost but now am found, Was blind, but now, I see.
