Who is Jesus? These guys can’t figure it out. Is he a prophet, is he a sinner? Is he a demon possessed mad man? Or is he the Son of God? Who do you say Jesus is? Who do your mates say Jesus is? Maybe to some of your mates, Jesus is a nice story with a rather gruesome ending. Maybe to some of the guys at school, Jesus is a good reason for presents and chocolate once a year. To some religions, Jesus is a cool dude who taught some good stuff. But who is he to you? You see that’s what matters, your opinion. It’s not who your parents think Jesus is, it’s not who your youth leader thinks Jesus is, it’s all about who you think Jesus is. When you get to stand in front of God, he won’t say, “who did the guys at college say Jesus is?” He won’t say “Who does your pastor say Jesus is?” God will want to know about your relationship with Jesus, he will want to know what you say. It’s pretty clear from this passage, that even knowing all the right stuff, doesn’t guarantee that you recognise Jesus as the Son of God. But you are more up together than some of those guys. You are not blinded by power, so who do you say Jesus is?
